PayPal launches local developer certification programme
PayPal has announced a special Australian-developer certification programme, kicking off with free seminars in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne from the 20th-24th of July.
Applications to attend the seminars are now open but only selected developers, who have completed an online survey, will be invited to attend.
Those lucky enough to be invited will get a voucher to take the PayPal developer certification exam, worth $300.
“We’re committed to building a local community of developers” said Spiro Rokos, a senior technical sales manager at PayPal Australia.
PayPal said that Australia will be the first market outside of the US to get its own localized certification programme, and has created an Australian local developer portal to supports its initiative.
The new Australian developer portal can be accessed via https://www.paypal.com.au/developer .
It includes links to a technical library with sample code, training and education materials, advice and a directory that connects merchants with PayPal Certified Developers.
Currently the directory links to the global PayPal developer list.
Four Australians are amongst the 30 or so non-US based developers listed, including Nerada Stern, founder and CEO of Melbourne-based business – www.InDemand.com.au.
Stern told eCommerce Report that the advent of a local certification programme was “a really good development”.
She said that a lot of the applications developed in the US, and included in the existing PayPal certification programme, aren’t really relevant in the local market.
“Bill Me Later, for example, is a payment application that just isn’t available in Australia. So having to learn about it when you’re only developing websites or payment applications for Australian merchants isn’t really necessary” she said.
Stern said that getting PayPal developer certification had certainly generated some business for her.
“Many people see PayPal as just an eBay thing but it’s a separate company and there are a growing number of businesses outside of eBay that accept PayPal” she said.
Applications to attend the free developer seminars can be done online at https://www.paypal-education.com.au/devdays.
