Myer giftcards used as bait in 'Shoppers Saving Center' phishing scam
Myer giftcards worth $500 are the bait in an apparent phishing scam hitting Australians email inboxes this week.
NSW minister for Fair Trading, Virginia Judge, raised the alarm about the emails in a warning statement she released earlier this week.
She said the scammers email purported to be from the ‘Shoppers Saving Centre’ and offers a $500 Myer gift card in return for taking part in a survey.
“This appears to be a phishing scam designed to obtain consumer’s internet provider addresses so that an embedded virus can access their banking details,” Ms Judge said.
“Myer has advised Fair Trading there is no association between Myer Pty Ltd and Shoppers Saving Centre.
“Consumers are advised to delete the email immediately and not to respond to the message under any circumstances.
Ms Judge said Fair Trading has received reports that participants in the survey never received the promised gift card.
She warned consumers to be wary of unsolicited emails.
“If it comes out of the blue and sounds too good to be true, then it usually is.
“If consumers have any concerns about scam emails they should contact Fair Trading on 13 32 20 immediately,” she said.
A statement posted on the Myers web-site backs up the warning from the minister and says that the company had been getting complaints.
We have received complaints from members of the public in relation to the offer of Myer Gift Cards by Shoppers Saving Centre on completion of an online survey.
There is no association between Myer and Shoppers Saving Centre, and we recommend that customers delete the email immediately.
Should customers wish to report the matter, or have had problems with this site, they should contact the local Fair Trading office.
The phishing email appears to be just the latest scam from the shoppers saving center as a quick Internet search (using American spelling) reveals this same business has been involved in similar scams previously.
