auDA cracks down on org.au domain registrations
Nearly a quarter of all the org.au domains licensed since 1 January 2007 are at risk of being de-registered by the end of June.
An Au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA) survey has revealed that 4,113 of the 18,000 org.au domains registered since 1 Jan 2007 fail to comply with the eligibility rules.
Only non-profit organisations, charities, trade unions, political parties, incorporated associations and sport or special interest clubs are eligible to register an org.au domain name.
But many org.au domain names have actually been registered by commercial businesses or individuals.
Others have been registered by non existent entities or have incomplete or ambiguous registration details.
auDA has warned registrars that they’ll have to bring non-compliant names into conformance by the end of June.
If they don’t, the names will be deleted.
An announcement posted at auDA’s web-site says that it is the registrar’s responsibility to notify affected org.au customers.
The announcement was posted to the auDA web site on the 27th of April,
It says that some of the non-compliant registrations may be because of simple errors, such as an employee registering an org.au in his or her own name rather than in the name of the employer organisation.
In that case updating with the correct details will ensure continued registration/
auDA said it invites anyone with a non-compliant registration to contact them for more information, although it also notes that only registrars can update contact details.
Ausregistry figures show a total of more than 39,000 org.au domains registered as at the end of March 2009.
That makes org the third most popular domain in the non governmental .au name space.
Com.au is by far the largest, with more than 1.16million names registered. Net.au is the second largest with some 132,000 names registered as at the end of March 2009.
